SADC Energy Week 2026 Opens with Focus on Clean Power, Regional Growth

Sustainable Energy Push Launched in Victoria Falls

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Sustainable Energy Week commenced on February 23 in Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls, marking a critical regional effort to accelerate clean energy adoption. Running through February 27, this year's theme emphasizes "Driving Regional Economic Growth through Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency" as 16 member states confront shared energy challenges.

Cross-Sector Collaboration Takes Center Stage

Zimbabwean Energy Minister July Moyo opened the conference by stressing the urgent need for synchronized energy policies across SADC nations. "Our machinery in industry and mining must become energy-efficient to fully utilize existing resources," Moyo told delegates from regional institutions, private enterprises, and development organizations.

Balancing Growth and Sustainability

With SADC's economy projected to expand 3.2% in 2026 according to African Development Bank estimates, the forum addresses a crucial dilemma: how to sustain growth while transitioning from fossil fuels. Technical workshops this week will explore grid modernization, renewable financing models, and efficiency standards for mining operations – a key economic driver for Botswana, Zambia, and the DPR Congo.

The event comes as member states work toward SADC's 2030 target of 35% renewable energy capacity. Current regional clean energy integration stands at 22%, with hydropower dominating but solar installations growing rapidly in Namibia and South Africa.
