French Authorities Raid X Offices, Summon Elon Musk in Expanded Probe

French police conducted a raid at the Paris offices of social media platform X on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as part of a multi-count investigation into alleged violations of French law. Prosecutors summoned X owner Elon Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino to a mandatory hearing on April 20, 2026, to address accusations ranging from dissemination of child sexual abuse material to Holocaust denial via AI-generated content.

The probe, initially launched in January 2025 following allegations of algorithmic bias affecting data processing systems, has expanded to include claims that Musk's AI chatbot Grok spread Holocaust-denying content and nonconsensual deepfakes. Holocaust denial is a criminal offense in France, carrying potential prison sentences.

Musk previously dismissed the investigation as politically motivated in July 2025, but prosecutors emphasized their "constructive approach" to ensure compliance with national laws. The case coincides with a separate EU investigation opened last month into X's handling of AI-generated explicit content under the bloc's Digital Services Act.

While X has not publicly commented on the raid, legal experts note that French authorities face enforcement challenges for individuals residing outside the country. The April hearing could determine whether the case proceeds to trial or is shelved.
