Norway took a bold step toward sustainable aviation this week as an electric aircraft completed its first simulated cargo flight between Stavanger and Bergen airports. The Alia plane, manufactured by U.S.-based Beta Technologies, flew 160 kilometers in 55 minutes during the groundbreaking test organized by Avinor, Norway’s state-owned airport operator.
The Flight That Could Reshape Air Transport
Operated by Bristow Norway, the zero-emission aircraft navigated real-world conditions while simulating a commercial cargo route. "Everything went very well," said Karianne Helland Strand, an Avinor director, emphasizing the flight’s significance as a first for this key trade corridor. The test evaluates integration with existing air traffic systems and ground infrastructure, with regulatory authorities closely monitoring progress.
Battery Tech Meets Nordic Ambition
With a 400-kilometer battery range – enough for round trips on regional routes – the Alia model addresses one of aviation’s toughest challenges: decarbonization. Pilot Jeremy Degagne dismissed concerns about energy limits: "We plan flights within the aircraft’s capabilities, just like traditional fuel-based operations."
Norway’s Green Transport Legacy Expands
Already a global leader in electric vehicles and maritime technology, Norway now aims to pioneer sustainable air travel. The testing phase will continue through January 2026, targeting commercial electric flights by 2030. This initiative aligns with the country’s broader climate goals, tackling a sector responsible for nearly 3% of global CO₂ emissions.
The project isn’t without precedent – a 2019 emergency landing during an earlier test highlighted technical challenges. However, Thursday’s successful flight signals growing confidence in electric aviation’s viability as nations worldwide seek cleaner transport solutions.
