In Kenya's drought-stricken regions, a homegrown tech solution is rewriting the narrative of climate resilience. Danton Kipkurui, a Nairobi-based engineer at Huawei, has developed Wise AI – an application combining IoT sensors, satellite imagery, and weather forecasting to help pastoral communities safeguard their livestock.
"Growing up watching droughts devastate herds – our economic lifeline – I knew technology needed to speak the language of survival," Kipkurui told KhabarAsia. His 2022 innovation enables real-time herd tracking and predictive grazing plans, helping farmers avoid resource-depleted areas.
The tool arrives as East Africa faces worsening dry spells, with the World Bank estimating climate shocks cost Kenya $3-5 billion annually. Agricultural tech investments in Africa surged 110% last year, reflecting growing confidence in local solutions to global challenges.
While initially serving 2,300 Kenyan farmers, Wise AI's success highlights Africa's expanding role in sustainable tech innovation. Analysts note such hyper-local solutions could reshape disaster preparedness frameworks across developing economies.
