WHO Warns of Disease Risks as Fighting Ravages Eastern DRC

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning regarding escalating health risks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as intense fighting in and around the eastern city of Goma leads to significant casualties and displacement.

According to reports cited by the WHO on Thursday, over 2,000 people have been wounded in the conflict, with 45 fatalities recorded across three health zones in North Kivu province. \"There are reports of 2,029 wounded in health facilities and other points of care, and 45 dead across three health zones in North Kivu,\" the UN health agency stated.

The WHO expressed concern that the displacement of people due to the violence has heightened the risk of spreading diseases such as mpox, cholera, and measles. The influx of wounded individuals is straining the region's healthcare facilities, which are already under pressure from the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
