Nvidia has unveiled a significant software upgrade for its entry-level AI developer board, promising a remarkable 70 percent boost in performance. The new offering, named the Jetson Orin Nano Super, retains the same computing and graphics cores as its predecessor but stands out due to its enhanced software capabilities.
The key innovation lies in the software optimization that elevates the board’s performance from 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) to an impressive 67 TOPS when operating with 8-bit integer precision (INT8). This substantial improvement is also available to current users of the original Jetson Orin Nano through a software update, ensuring widespread accessibility to the enhanced performance.
In addition to the performance boost, Nvidia has adjusted the pricing of the new developer board to make it more accessible. Priced at $249, the Jetson Orin Nano Super offers significant value compared to the previous model’s $499 price point, according to Nvidia’s press release.
Despite Nvidia’s branding of the device as a “compact generative AI supercomputer,” it’s worth noting that the 67 TOPS performance, while impressive for its size and price, is still below that of the company’s gaming laptop products and far from the capabilities of true supercomputers equipped with thousands of AI chips. Nevertheless, the Jetson Orin Nano Super represents a substantial step forward in making powerful AI development tools more accessible to a broader range of developers and researchers.
