China and ASEAN Collaborate on AI Development at Cambodian Symposium

The bustling city of Phnom Penh played host to a groundbreaking symposium on Monday, where leaders and experts from China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) convened to discuss cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI) development and governance. The event aimed at harnessing AI’s immense potential to drive sustainable socio-economic growth across the region.

In his inspiring opening remarks, Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth highlighted the transformative impact of AI on industries worldwide. “We see AI as a tool not only for innovation, but also for inclusion and sustainability,” he stated, emphasizing the technology’s role as a catalyst for growth and prosperity.

Vissoth elaborated on Cambodia’s commitment to digital advancement, noting that the government has prioritized integrating technology into its development strategy. “By ensuring that technological innovation, including AI, uplifts all segments of society, we aim to leave no one behind,” he declared, underscoring the nation’s vision for an inclusive future.

The symposium shed light on the broader opportunities AI presents for ASEAN-China collaboration. Vissoth pointed out that China’s Global AI Governance Initiative aligns seamlessly with ASEAN’s vision for multilateral cooperation. “Our shared commitment to coordinated efforts bridges regional and global aspirations,” he observed, suggesting that such alignment could propel the region into a new era of prosperity.

Echoing these sentiments, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin expressed optimism about the cooperative prospects. “China and ASEAN have a solid foundation, huge potential, and broad opportunities for cooperation in the field of AI,” he remarked. “China is willing to strengthen cooperation in the development and governance of AI with ASEAN countries, including Cambodia.”

The symposium highlighted AI’s potential to help ASEAN nations and China overcome developmental barriers and tackle persistent challenges. “AI offers unparalleled opportunities to leapfrog developmental hurdles, ushering in a new age of prosperity, inclusiveness, and sustainability,” Vissoth affirmed.

As AI continues to advance, such collaborative efforts between China and ASEAN are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the region. By leveraging technology for the greater good, these nations are taking significant steps toward achieving shared goals of growth, innovation, and inclusive development.
