2024 World Laureates Forum Kicks Off in Shanghai, Celebrating Excellence in Science

The 2024 World Laureates Forum (WLA Forum) opened on Friday at its permanent site in Shanghai, bringing together nearly 300 scientists from around 20 countries and regions to celebrate excellence in science.

Under the annual theme “Excellence in Science,” the forum gathers an impressive array of talent, including 11 Nobel laureates, over 40 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and approximately 100 outstanding young scientists.

The opening ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with the award ceremony for the prestigious WLA Prize, followed by keynote speeches from five world-leading scientists. Among the speakers were three Nobel laureates and prominent academicians, who shared insights on the latest global developments in life sciences, physical sciences, and intelligent sciences.

Professor Jon Kleinberg of Cornell University and Professor Jeremy Nathans of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine were honored with the 2024 WLA Prize for their groundbreaking achievements in computer science or mathematics and life science or medicine, respectively.

Both professors hold esteemed positions in the global academic community and have fostered deep connections with China’s scientific community by mentoring outstanding Chinese students and collaborating with Chinese research institutions. Marking their first visit to Shanghai, they are set to participate in a variety of academic reports and exchange activities during the forum.

This year’s forum extends its reach by inviting award winners to visit universities, research institutions, and middle schools, offering a scientific feast of global excellence to researchers and young scholars. For the first time, the forum is also open to the public, allowing professional audiences from universities and research institutions to register and attend in person.

By fostering international collaboration and inspiring the next generation of scientists, the 2024 WLA Forum continues to solidify Shanghai’s position as a global hub for scientific excellence.
