China Leads in Global Patent Applications for Fifth Straight Year, Says WIPO Chief

China has once again secured its position as the world’s leader in international patent applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), marking the fifth consecutive year at the top, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) chief.

During the ongoing 2024 International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) World Congress in Hangzhou City, east China’s Zhejiang Province, WIPO Director General Daren Tang highlighted this achievement in a video speech. He noted the significance of the congress being held in China for the first time, calling it a milestone in the global intellectual property landscape.

“In the mid-1990s, when China joined the PCT, the annual number of international patent applications from China was only about 100,” Tang remarked. “By 2023, this number has surged to approximately 70,000.”

Shoichi Okuyama, President of AIPPI, echoed Tang’s sentiments, emphasizing the rapid growth of intellectual property applications in China. “China has become the country with the most international patent applications,” he said. “This reflects the tremendous progress in China’s scientific and technological innovation capacity.”

China’s commitment to strengthening intellectual property protection has been evident through its efforts to formulate and improve relevant laws. The country has also maintained active communication and exchanges with international partners, fostering a collaborative environment for innovation.

Notably, China became the first nation to surpass 4 million valid domestic invention patents. Its applications for international patents via the PCT, design patents in the Hague System, and international trademarks under the Madrid System rank among the highest globally.

The AIPPI World Congress, held from October 20 to 22, has attracted around 2,300 industry insiders from 92 countries and regions. Delegates are engaging in in-depth discussions on cutting-edge and pressing issues in the field of intellectual property, highlighting the global significance of intellectual property rights in today’s interconnected world.
