On Tuesday evening, China took a significant leap forward in its ambitious plan to provide global satellite internet services by successfully launching a group of 18 satellites from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province. The satellites, part of the “Spacesail Constellation”—also known as “Thousand Sails Constellation” or “G60″—were carried into orbit aboard a modified Long March-6 carrier rocket, which lifted off at 7:06 p.m. Beijing Time.
The “Spacesail Constellation” project is China’s answer to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet constellation. With a vision to deploy over 15,000 low-Earth orbit satellites by 2030, the initiative aims to provide global users with low-latency, high-speed, and ultra-reliable satellite broadband internet services. This ambitious endeavor reflects China’s commitment to enhancing global connectivity and expanding its presence in the burgeoning space economy.
This launch marks the second batch of satellites sent into orbit for the constellation, following the first set of 18 satellites launched in August. The successful deployment of these satellites underscores China’s rapid progress in space technology and its dedication to establishing a comprehensive satellite network.
The modified Long March-6 rocket used for this mission was developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology. As a new generation of non-toxic and pollution-free launch vehicles, it is capable of delivering payloads exceeding 4.5 tonnes to a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 700 kilometers. This advanced rocket technology not only enhances payload capacity but also aligns with global efforts to minimize environmental impact in space exploration.
Tuesday’s launch represents the 539th flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series, a testament to China’s longstanding and evolving capabilities in space exploration. As the “Spacesail Constellation” project progresses, it holds the promise of revolutionizing global internet access and fostering international cooperation in space technology.
