China has reached a significant milestone in the advancement of its artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with over 600 million registered users now utilizing generative AI services, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
At a recent press conference, Zhao Zhiguo, chief engineer at the MIIT, highlighted the continuous expansion of the country’s core AI industry. “We now have over 4,500 companies operating in the AI sector,” Zhao stated, emphasizing the rapid growth and innovation within China’s AI landscape.
Zhao noted that nearly 200 generative AI service models have been registered and made available to the public. These models are contributing to various applications across industries, enhancing productivity and fostering new business opportunities.
To further accelerate the development of AI, Zhao stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity of AI infrastructure for public services. “It’s essential to establish accessible, adaptable, and highly available AI development platforms,” he said. “This will accelerate the training, optimization, and large-scale application of AI models.”
Efforts are also underway to enhance the supply capability of computing power facilities. Zhao mentioned plans to build a unified national computing system, aiming to increase the share of intelligent computing resources and support the growing demand for AI services.
In line with these initiatives, China Mobile, the country’s leading telecommunications operator, launched an evaluation standard for general AI large models. Developed in collaboration with the China Electronics Standardization Institute and 16 key enterprises, this standard provides a reference framework for companies to select high-quality AI models.
The evaluation standard focuses on six key dimensions: functionality, accuracy, reliability, safety, interactivity, and applicability. It is designed to comprehensively assess the core competencies of large AI models in practical applications.
The standard covers a wide range of industry scenarios, including telecommunications, transportation, energy, and manufacturing. By providing clear guidelines and benchmarks, it aims to drive the adoption of AI technologies across key sectors, promoting efficiency and innovation.
China’s commitment to advancing AI technology reflects its broader strategy to position itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence. With a rapidly expanding user base and ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and standards, the country is poised to make significant contributions to the global AI landscape.
