China Surpasses 600 Million Users in Generative AI Services
China's generative artificial intelligence (AI) landscape is experiencing a significant surge, with over 600 million registered users now utilizing generative AI services, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). This milestone was announced on Saturday, highlighting the rapid adoption and integration of AI technologies across the nation.
Zhao Zhiguo, chief engineer at the MIIT, emphasized the continuous expansion of China's core AI industry, noting that more than 4,500 companies are now actively operating in this sector. \"The growth of generative AI is not just about numbers; it's about the transformative impact on industries and services,\" Zhao remarked.
Currently, nearly 200 generative AI service models are registered and available to the public. These models are shaping various facets of daily life and business operations, offering innovative solutions and enhancing efficiency.
Zhao underscored the importance of strengthening AI infrastructure to support this burgeoning field. \"Enhancing the capacity of AI infrastructure for public services and establishing accessible, adaptable, and highly available AI development platforms are essential,\" he stated. Efforts are also underway to bolster the supply capability of computing power facilities. Building a unified national computing system is a critical step towards increasing the share of intelligent computing resources, further supporting AI advancements across the country.
In a significant move to standardize AI development, China Mobile, the nation's telecommunications operator, launched an evaluation standard for general AI large models on the same day. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the China Electronics Standardization Institute and 16 key enterprises, aims to provide a reliable reference for companies seeking high-quality AI models.
The new standard is driven by actual demand from key industries and focuses on six core dimensions: functionality, accuracy, reliability, safety, interactivity, and applicability. It offers a comprehensive assessment of the core competencies required in the application of large AI models.
The evaluation covers a wide range of industry scenarios, including telecommunications, transportation, energy, and manufacturing. This broad applicability ensures that diverse sectors can benefit from AI advancements, fostering innovation and efficiency across the economy.
