Chinese Hospital Pioneers Radiation-Free Heart Disease Treatment

Beijing’s Fuwai Hospital, under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS), has introduced a groundbreaking radiation-free percutaneous intervention for treating heart diseases. This innovative method promises to transform cardiovascular care by making treatments safer and more accessible.

Ultrasound-Guided, Minimally Invasive Procedure

The new treatment utilizes ultrasound imaging to guide minimally invasive instruments through peripheral blood vessels directly into the heart. Unlike traditional procedures that rely on radiation and require patients to undergo surgery, this approach eliminates the need for both. Patients can remain awake throughout the procedure, significantly reducing recovery times and associated risks.

Accessible and Suitable for Vulnerable Patients

This radiation-free method is particularly beneficial for pregnant women, individuals with allergies, and cancer patients, as it avoids the risks associated with radiation exposure. Additionally, since the procedure doesn’t require expensive imported equipment, it becomes more accessible to medical facilities with limited resources, both within China and internationally.

Advancing Cardiovascular Treatment Globally

Fuwai Hospital has been at the forefront of cardiovascular innovations, developing over 17 new treatments for various heart conditions, including congenital heart disease, valvular disease, and arrhythmia. With 65 patents secured, the hospital has also created numerous therapeutic instruments, such as ultrasonic catheters and surgical robots. To date, 23 of these devices are available in China and have been introduced to international markets.

Enhancing Global Medical Services

The implementation of this procedure is expected to enhance primary medical services by providing effective heart disease treatments to outpatients. This advancement is set to extend quality heart care to countries and regions with limited medical resources, supported by funding from the United Nations.

International Collaboration and Outreach

Medical teams from Fuwai Hospital are actively involved in international collaborations, bringing Chinese cardiovascular treatment solutions to over 30 countries, including France, Germany, Canada, Russia, and Kenya. Their efforts are fostering global health improvements and strengthening international medical ties.
