Rising Hair Loss Among China’s Gen Z: Experts Blame Stress and Lifestyle

The age of individuals seeking medical help for hair loss is decreasing in China, with a growing number of young people facing this concerning trend. Liu Ling, a professor at Xijing Hospital of Air Force Medical University, has observed a significant shift in her patients’ demographics. “In the past, my patients were mostly in their 40s,” she noted. “Now, even middle and high school students are seeking consultations.”

Liu explains that genetics is no longer the sole factor contributing to hair loss among the youth. “Stress from school and work plays a crucial role,” she said. High-intensity mental work, particularly prevalent among students and young professionals, increases the risk of hair loss. Liu pointed out that medical students are especially susceptible due to their rigorous academic demands.

One of her students lamented, “Despite my academic success, my hair is half gone.” This sentiment echoes a growing concern among China’s Generation Z, who are striving for excellence at the expense of their health.

To combat this trend, Liu suggests that young people adopt healthier lifestyle habits, drawing inspiration from the wisdom of older generations. “It’s important to balance work and relaxation,” she advised. “Simple changes like proper sleep, balanced nutrition, and regular physical activity can make a significant difference.”

By addressing stressors and promoting well-being, experts hope to help China’s youth maintain not just their hair but also their overall health. As the pressures of modern life intensify, adopting time-tested wellness practices may be the key to reversing this worrisome pattern.
