China’s seven-day National Day holiday marked a significant milestone for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, as it experienced unprecedented traffic volumes since its opening.
Opened on June 30, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a cross-sea passage spanning approximately 24 kilometers, connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan in south China’s Guangdong Province. It serves as a core transportation project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, dubbed the ‘transportation backbone’ of the region.
On October 1, the link recorded a total traffic of 155,000 vehicles, setting a new daily record, according to the link’s official WeChat account.
To ensure smooth travel during the holiday rush, over 170 personnel specializing in road administration, monitoring, rescue, and maintenance were deployed, alongside more than 100 traffic police personnel from Shenzhen and Zhongshan, and nearly 100 special operation vehicles.
Since its opening, the link has significantly reduced travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan from two hours to just 30 minutes, enhancing connectivity and promoting integration within the Greater Bay Area. In its first 72 hours of operation, daily traffic volume surpassed 100,000 vehicles, accounting for a quarter of the daily traffic across the Pearl River.
The record-breaking traffic during the National Day holiday underscores the vital role the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link plays in facilitating movement, boosting economic activities, and fostering closer ties among cities within the Greater Bay Area.
