China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has voiced strong opposition to the European Union’s decision to impose anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement came after the EU voted in favor of the measure, a move that has escalated trade tensions between the two economies.
MOFCOM labeled the EU’s actions as protectionist, calling them “unfair, non-compliant, and unreasonable.” The ministry firmly rejected the imposition of anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese EVs, emphasizing China’s consistent stance against such practices.
The EU Commission confirmed on Friday that the proposal to impose definitive tariffs on Chinese-made EVs received the necessary support from member states. With 12 member states abstaining, five opposing, and ten in favor, the EU is now authorized to levy steep anti-subsidy duties on Chinese EV imports for the next five years.
The China Chamber of Commerce to the EU (CCCEU) expressed deep disappointment with the vote outcome. In a statement released on Friday, the CCCEU voiced strong dissatisfaction with the EU’s use of protectionist trade measures. “Negotiation teams from China and the EU remain actively engaged in discussions, striving to find viable solutions,” the statement noted. The CCCEU urged the EU to approach the final measures with caution, delay the implementation of the tariffs, and prioritize resolving trade tensions through consultation and dialogue.
Despite the authorization to impose tariffs, the EU Commission stated it would continue negotiations with China. The goal is to explore alternative solutions that are compliant with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, address the subsidies identified in its investigation, and are monitorable and enforceable.
MOFCOM acknowledged the EU’s willingness to continue negotiations but emphasized China’s firm opposition to the EU’s final draft decision. Technical teams from both sides are scheduled to resume talks on October 7.
“China hopes the EU will recognize that imposing tariffs will not solve the problem,” MOFCOM stated. The ministry urged the EU to fulfill its political commitments and return to the proper path of resolving trade disputes through consultation. MOFCOM reiterated that China will take all necessary measures to safeguard the interests of its enterprises.
