BYD has announced a recall of nearly 97,000 electric vehicles due to a manufacturing issue involving the steering control unit, which could lead to fire risks, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
The recall affects the Dolphin and Yuan Plus models produced between November 2022 and December 2023, the SAMR stated.
These two models have been BYD’s best-selling cars in 2023, accounting for 26 percent of the company’s total sales of around 3 million units for the year, as per data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
While BYD has rapidly ascended to become one of the world’s largest sellers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, recalls of its models have been relatively rare. In 2022, the company recalled a small batch of Tang plug-in hybrids over battery pack defects that posed a fire hazard.
BYD has not yet responded to requests for comment. However, according to the SAMR, the company will ask its authorized dealers to install a “physical fix” on the recalled vehicles.
It remains unclear if any of the recalled vehicles were exported.
