China Unveils Ambitious Plan to Propel Mobile IoT for ‘Intelligent Connectivity’

Beijing, October 18 — China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) unveiled an ambitious plan on Wednesday to accelerate the development of the mobile Internet of Things (IoT) for “Intelligent Connectivity.” The initiative aims to bolster the nation’s supply, innovation capabilities, and industrial value in the burgeoning mobile IoT sector.

The plan outlines a comprehensive strategy to promote the application of mobile IoT across key fields such as intelligent connected vehicles, healthcare, and smart homes. By integrating advanced technologies, China seeks to enhance everyday life and drive industrial growth.

Driving into the Future with Intelligent Vehicles

In the realm of intelligent connected vehicles, the MIIT emphasized efforts to advance mobile IoT applications in scenarios like driving monitoring and autonomous driving. The goal is to realize functionalities like information exchange and sharing, complex environment perception, and intelligent decision-making, propelling the automotive industry into a new era of innovation.

Ambitious Targets Set for 2027

By 2027, China aims to significantly improve its mobile IoT ecosystem. The number of mobile IoT terminal connections is expected to exceed 3.6 billion, highlighting the country’s commitment to becoming a global leader in IoT connectivity.

To achieve this, the plan supports the establishment of more than five mobile IoT industrial clusters and over ten mobile IoT industry demonstration bases by 2027. These hubs are intended to foster innovation, collaboration, and growth within the industry.

Four Key Tasks to Propel Innovation

The MIIT’s plan outlines four essential tasks:

  • Strengthening the foundational IoT network: Enhancing infrastructure to support widespread IoT connectivity.
  • Enhancing industrial innovation capacity: Encouraging research and development to drive technological advances.
  • Boosting the integrated application of smart technologies: Promoting the convergence of IoT with other cutting-edge technologies.
  • Fostering a favorable development environment: Creating policies and conditions conducive to industry growth.

Accelerating Digital Transformation

The ministry emphasized its commitment to accelerating the integration of mobile IoT with key industries, supporting their digital transformation and advancing new forms of industrialization. By leveraging IoT technologies, traditional industries can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and unlock new opportunities.

Current Growth and Industry Impact

By the end of July this year, the number of mobile IoT connections in China neared 2.55 billion, accounting for 59 percent of the nation’s total mobile terminal connections, according to official data. This substantial growth underscores the rapid adoption of IoT technologies across various sectors.

China’s proactive approach to developing mobile IoT infrastructure and applications positions the country as a significant player in the global push towards intelligent connectivity. The implementation of this plan is expected to have far-reaching impacts on domestic industries and the global economy.
