German AI Researcher Highlights China’s Dynamic Innovation Environment

During a LinkedIn graduate recruitment event in Beijing in August 2024, Michael Ly, a German AI researcher at Renmin University of China, shared his insights on the expansive opportunities for artificial intelligence research in the Chinese mainland compared to Europe. In an interview with CGTN’s Enoch Wong, Ly highlighted China’s adaptive approach to innovation, contrasting it with the more regulated and slower-moving research environments he experienced in Europe.

“In China, there’s a remarkable willingness to experiment and support groundbreaking research,” Ly said. “From exoskeletons to electric vehicles, the pace at which projects move from concept to implementation is unparalleled.”

Ly emphasized the advantages of working within China’s dynamic research ecosystem. “The collaboration between academia and industry here accelerates progress,” he noted. “The environment fosters creativity and encourages researchers to push the boundaries without being hindered by excessive regulation.”

With a background that spans Germany and Vietnam, Ly expressed his ambition to bridge AI innovation between China, Germany, and Vietnam. “My goal is to create a global network of AI research that leverages the strengths of each country,” he explained. “China’s rapid development in AI can offer valuable lessons and opportunities for collaboration.”

The event underscored China’s growing appeal to international talent in the tech sector. As the country continues to invest heavily in AI and other emerging technologies, researchers like Ly are finding a fertile ground for innovation. “Being here allows me to be at the forefront of AI advancements,” Ly added. “It’s an exciting time to be involved in this field, and I believe the possibilities are limitless.”
