China Enhances Overseas IP Protection to Support Domestic Enterprises

China is ramping up efforts to assist domestic enterprises in safeguarding their intellectual property (IP) rights overseas, according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). On Wednesday, Song Beibei, a senior official from the CNIPA, announced the establishment of 71 sub-centers across the country dedicated to managing international IP disputes.

In addition to domestic initiatives, China has set up branch centers in five countries aimed at guiding Chinese enterprises through the complexities of protecting their IP rights abroad. These centers serve as critical resources for businesses facing international challenges in IP enforcement and litigation.

The CNIPA is also intensifying training programs and offering expert guidance to bolster the capabilities of Chinese companies. “The lack of expertise, response capacity, and information has become a major obstacle that hinders some of them from expanding internationally,” Song noted.

To proactively address risks, the CNIPA has implemented robust monitoring mechanisms, particularly focusing on industries like cross-border e-commerce. By releasing monitoring reports and timely reminder letters, the agency helps enterprises stay informed about potential IP risks in international markets. An information service platform has also been established to provide comprehensive guidelines on IP protection in major countries, offering valuable insights for businesses venturing abroad.

With China’s growing involvement in global trade, the number of IP disputes encountered by Chinese enterprises overseas is on the rise. Recognizing this, Song emphasized China’s commitment to supporting its enterprises in navigating these challenges. To date, the CNIPA has signed intellectual property cooperation agreements with 57 countries under the Belt and Road Initiative, fostering international collaboration and mutual protection of IP rights.
