Zanzibar State House, Tanzania — In a heartfelt ceremony held at the Zanzibar State House on Monday, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi awarded medals and commemorative certificates to members of the 33rd batch of the Chinese medical team. The accolades recognize the team’s remarkable contributions to the archipelago’s medical and healthcare advancements over the past year.
President Mwinyi expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese government for its unwavering support in enhancing Zanzibar’s healthcare sector for nearly six decades. “The Chinese medical team has demonstrated exceptional hard work and selfless dedication,” he remarked. “Their advanced medical technology has not only treated countless local patients but also enriched our medical community by training local medical students and doctors.”
The president highlighted the team’s significant role in developing minimally invasive laparoscopic technology in Zanzibar. “Their efforts have enabled our doctors to achieve a qualitative leap in laparoscopic procedures, moving from foundational skills to advanced practices,” Mwinyi noted. “This progress is a testament to the fruitful cooperation between Zanzibar and China.”
Jiang Guoqing, the chief of the medical team, reaffirmed their commitment to Zanzibar’s healthcare development. “We will continue to strengthen health cooperation and exchanges,” Jiang said. “Our goal is to provide high-quality medical services to the local community and contribute to the enduring friendship between China and Africa.”
Since their arrival in September last year, the Chinese medical team has treated nearly 40,000 outpatients and organized 20 large-scale free clinics across the islands. Their efforts have significantly improved access to medical care for many Zanzibaris, particularly in underserved areas.
China’s medical assistance to Zanzibar dates back to 1964, marking a long-standing partnership focused on health and humanitarian efforts. Over the years, numerous Chinese medical professionals have worked alongside their Tanzanian counterparts, fostering mutual respect and collaboration.
As the 33rd batch concludes its mission, preparations are underway for the arrival of the next team. Both nations look forward to continuing their cooperation, with shared goals of enhancing healthcare services and strengthening bilateral ties.
