IAEA Eager to Deepen Nuclear Cooperation with China

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed a strong desire to enhance its collaboration with China in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, citing China’s significant advancements in nuclear technology. Sophie Boutaud de la Combe, Director of the Office of Public Information and Communication at the IAEA, highlighted the multifaceted cooperation between the agency and China during an event commemorating the 40th anniversary of China’s accession to the IAEA.

"The IAEA is highly impressed by China’s remarkable progress in nuclear development," said Boutaud de la Combe. "We are eager to deepen our collaboration with China in areas such as nuclear energy, nuclear technology applications, nuclear safety and security, and nonproliferation."

She noted that the cooperation between the IAEA and the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) has led to significant achievements. "These accomplishments are not only crucial for China’s development but also have a far-reaching impact on the peaceful use of nuclear energy globally," she said. "I look forward to learning more about China’s progress and exploring how to leverage and promote these successful experiences through our partnership with the CAEA News Center."

Boutaud de la Combe emphasized China’s growing role as a key supporter of the IAEA, both financially and politically, thanks to its extraordinary economic growth and advancements in technology and expertise. She also expressed gratitude to Chinese experts who are sharing their knowledge with other countries. "China is helping other countries achieve their own energy goals by building quickly and safely their own capability in nuclear power development," she added.

Liu Jing, Vice Chairman of the CAEA, affirmed China’s commitment to working with the IAEA and all relevant parties to promote innovation in nuclear energy technology. "Since its accession to the IEA 40 years ago, China has maintained close collaboration with the agency, significantly enhancing the safety and development of China’s nuclear energy," Liu said. "China is willing to jointly promote technological innovation and continuously expand cooperation to ensure that the benefits of nuclear energy reach more countries."

During her visit to China, Boutaud de la Combe toured several key nuclear facilities and institutions, including the China National Nuclear Corporation, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Qinshan Nuclear Power Base. She is also scheduled to visit the China General Nuclear Power Group, the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base, and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong Province to learn about the latest nuclear technology applications in China.
