In response to escalating safety concerns after a series of electric vehicle (EV) fires, the government and ruling party of the Republic of Korea (ROK) have announced an accelerated launch of a comprehensive EV battery certification program. Set to begin in October, this initiative aims to bolster public confidence in EV safety amid growing adoption.
The urgency of this move was underscored by a dramatic incident on August 1, when a Mercedes-Benz EV equipped with Farasis Energy batteries ignited, burning for eight relentless hours. The blaze damaged around 140 vehicles and forced residents of nearby apartments to evacuate, highlighting the potential risks associated with EV battery malfunctions.
“We recognize the public’s concern and are taking immediate action to ensure the safety of electric vehicles,” said Han Zeea, spokesperson for the People Power Party. “In addition to accelerating the certification program, we will require automakers to transparently disclose the manufacturers of the batteries used in their EVs.”
Some automakers have proactively begun sharing this information, signaling industry support for greater transparency. While ROK battery manufacturers are expected to embrace these measures, experts caution that transparency alone may not suffice to enhance safety. “Disclosing battery brands is a step forward, but without comprehensive data on which batteries are more susceptible to fires, it doesn’t fully address the safety issue,” noted an industry specialist.
EV fires present unique challenges compared to those involving traditional combustion engines. They often burn longer and are more difficult to extinguish due to the risk of reignition, necessitating specialized firefighting techniques and equipment.
The government’s swift action reflects a commitment to fostering a safe environment for the burgeoning EV market in the ROK. As the nation pushes forward with eco-friendly transportation initiatives, ensuring the safety of these vehicles remains a top priority.
