A monumental achievement has been marked in China’s energy sector as the Bozhong 19-6 Condensate Gas Field, a mega gas field project in the Bohai Sea, surpassed the production of over 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas, according to an announcement by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
Commencing production in November 2023, the Bozhong 19-6 gas field has rapidly become a cornerstone in providing a stable and reliable supply of clean energy to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Bohai Rim region. This significant output not only bolsters domestic energy security but also underscores China’s commitment to expanding its offshore energy resources.
Located in the central Bohai Sea, the gas field boasts explored natural gas reserves exceeding 200 billion cubic meters, and condensate oil reserves surpassing 200 million cubic meters, as reported by CNOOC. The development has led to the construction of six offshore oil and gas platforms, highlighting the scale and ambition of the project.
“The project’s peak daily production of natural gas reaches 2.4 million cubic meters,” stated Jiang An, general manager of a subsidiary of CNOOC’s Tianjin branch, in an interview with China Media Group (CMG). “This has practical significance for the safe and efficient development of other gas fields in the region.”
Looking ahead, the phase II development project of the gas field is underway. Zhang Chunsheng, deputy general manager of CNOOC’s Tianjin branch, commented, “These projects lay a solid foundation for the development of large-scale oil and gas resources in the ultra-deep area of the Bohai Sea.”
The success of the Bozhong 19-6 gas field project marks a significant milestone in China’s offshore energy exploration, promising enhanced energy supply and contributing to the economic growth of the surrounding regions. As the project progresses into its next phase, it is poised to further strengthen China’s position in the global energy landscape.
