China’s Power Generation Capacity Soars 14% in First Seven Months

China’s power generation capacity experienced remarkable growth in the first seven months of this year, expanding by 14 percent compared to the same period last year. According to data released by the National Energy Administration on Friday, the country’s total installed power generation capacity reached approximately 3.1 billion kilowatts by the end of July.

This surge is largely attributed to significant advancements in renewable energy. Solar power led the way with a staggering 49.8 percent increase in cumulative capacity, reaching 740 million kilowatts. Wind power also showed impressive growth, rising 19.8 percent year on year.

Investment in power infrastructure has been a driving force behind this expansion. From January to July, major power enterprises in China invested a total of 415.8 billion yuan (about $58.27 billion) in power supply projects, marking a 2.6-percent increase over the same period last year. Furthermore, investment in power grid projects soared to 294.7 billion yuan, up 19.2 percent year on year.

The country’s growing appetite for electricity reflects its dynamic economic activity. During this period, China’s power consumption climbed 7.7 percent to nearly 5.6 trillion kilowatt-hours, signaling robust industrial development and increasing demand from both businesses and households.

These developments underscore China’s commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable energy sources. The significant investments in renewable energy not only contribute to meeting the country’s growing power needs but also align with global efforts to combat climate change.
