Residents across Russia experienced widespread disruptions to popular messaging services Telegram and WhatsApp on Wednesday, as reported by the country’s official media regulator, Roskomnadzor.
“On August 21, from 2 p.m., the Public Communications Network Monitoring and Control Center recorded a large-scale disruption in the operation of messengers Telegram and WhatsApp,” Roskomnadzor said in a statement.
Russian media outlets also reported that users encountered difficulties accessing Wikipedia and the iOS App Store.
State media agency TASS reported that the failure of several services in the country was connected to a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Russian telecom operators, citing Roskomnadzor’s press service.
