In a remarkable leap forward for renewable energy, construction has commenced on the second phase of the Huadian Tibet Caipeng Photovoltaic Power Station, situated in Shannan Prefecture of southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. This project, which broke ground on Tuesday, is set at an astonishing maximum altitude of 5,228 meters, surpassing previous records to become the world’s highest elevation for a solar power station.
The new phase of the power station spans altitudes from 5,046 to 5,228 meters and adds an impressive 100 megawatts of installed capacity through nearly 170,000 photovoltaic panels. To ensure a stable power supply, the facility incorporates an advanced energy storage system capable of delivering 80,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity continuously for four hours during nighttime, bridging the gap when solar generation ceases.
As a pivotal project in Xizang’s power infrastructure, the Caipeng Photovoltaic Power Station is poised to reach a total installed capacity of 150 megawatts upon completion. It is projected to generate approximately 246 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, significantly bolstering the region’s energy supply and contributing to sustainable development.
The first phase of the power station became operational at the end of 2023 and has already demonstrated substantial benefits. Generating over 40 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, it has provided much-needed relief from seasonal power shortages in Shannan Prefecture. The success of the initial phase underscores the project’s potential to transform the energy landscape of the region.
This expansion not only sets a new global benchmark for high-altitude solar power generation but also reflects China’s commitment to renewable energy and addressing energy challenges in remote areas. The project’s advancements are expected to have far-reaching impacts, offering insights into renewable energy deployment under extreme environmental conditions and promoting sustainable practices in high-altitude regions worldwide.
