Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform the educational landscape, reshaping the role of human teachers as powerful AI tools continue to emerge. Zhang Bo, academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted this shift during a panel discussion at a forum held at Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing on Friday.
“AI will affect how the teacher and the teaching machine function in the field of education, such as whether the machine will replace or weaken the human teacher’s role,” Zhang stated, emphasizing the profound impact AI advancements will have on teaching methodologies and the traditional classroom dynamic.
The forum, a sideline event of the award ceremony of a national AI robot competition, gathered experts and scholars to discuss the future of AI in education. Hosted by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI), the event aimed to showcase recent research findings and applications in the area of AI in China.
As AI technologies evolve, educational institutions are exploring how to integrate these tools to enhance learning experiences. The potential for AI to personalize education, automate administrative tasks, and provide intelligent tutoring systems presents both opportunities and challenges for educators worldwide.
While some fear that AI may replace human teachers, Zhang suggests that the future may see a collaborative relationship between educators and technology. “The key is to find ways for teachers and AI to complement each other’s strengths,” he noted.
The discussions at the forum underscore a growing recognition in academia of AI’s transformative potential in education. As AI continues to advance, stakeholders in the education sector are called upon to adapt and innovate, ensuring that the integration of technology benefits learners and supports teachers in their evolving roles.
