Chinese Nominee Elected as Chair of APEC Energy Working Group

In a significant milestone for China’s participation in global energy governance, the Chinese nominee has been elected as the Chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group for the 2025-2026 term.

The election took place during the recently concluded 68th meeting of the APEC Energy Working Group, as announced by China’s National Energy Administration on Saturday. This marks the first time China has secured a leadership position within the APEC energy cooperation mechanism.

The National Energy Administration highlighted that this achievement reflects the recognition of China’s advancements in energy development by APEC member economies. It signifies China’s deepening involvement in international energy affairs and underscores its commitment to contributing to regional and global energy initiatives.

Advancing Energy Transformation

China has pledged to reach carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. In recent years, the country has accelerated the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system, achieving historic milestones in the energy sector. Concurrently, China has promoted global energy governance reforms, fostering global clean energy partnerships, establishing the Belt and Road energy partnership, and advocating for an international energy transformation alliance.

Commitment to Regional Cooperation

China has expressed its intent to utilize this leadership role to promote constructive and positive dialogue within the APEC Energy Working Group. The aim is to align the group’s development direction with the guidance of APEC leaders, ministers, and senior officials. Furthermore, China seeks to strengthen collaboration with all member economies, promote regional sustainable development, and contribute its wisdom, solutions, and strength to building a community with a shared future in the Asia-Pacific.

About the APEC Energy Working Group

Established in 1990, the APEC Energy Working Group is one of the 14 specialized working groups under the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation. The group serves as a multilateral cooperation framework for the energy sector among APEC’s 21 member economies, aiming to promote energy cooperation and contribute to the economic prosperity and social well-being of the people in the APEC region.
