Chinese Scientists Capture Shock Breakout of Supernova SN 2024ggi

Chinese scientists have captured the spectacular moment when the shock wave of supernova SN 2024ggi broke through its surrounding dense circumstellar material (CSM), offering crucial insights into the mysteries of late-stage stellar evolution and stellar death.

According to the Yunnan Observatories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), this study enhances the understanding of the initial stages of supernova explosions and the propagation of shock waves through asymmetric stellar environments. The related findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

SN 2024ggi is located approximately 20 million light-years from Earth. Zhang Jujia, a researcher at the Yunnan Observatories, showed China Media Group (CMG) an image of the supernova. \
