New Plant Species ‘Paraphlomis baiwanensis’ Discovered in South China

A remarkable discovery has emerged from the lush landscapes of south China’s Guangdong Province. Researchers have identified a new plant species, Paraphlomis baiwanensis, nestled within the Baiwan Provincial Nature Reserve in Qingyuan City.

The journey to this discovery began in 2023 when a scientific expedition team conducted an in-depth biodiversity survey across several karst mountains in Qingyuan. Amidst the rich tapestry of flora, they spotted an unfamiliar member of the Lamiaceae family. Intrigued by its unique characteristics, the team embarked on a year-long field investigation.

Utilizing methods in morphology, molecular phylogeny, and population genetics, the researchers confirmed that this plant was indeed a new species. The findings were recently published in the international journal of plant taxonomy, PhytoKeys, solidifying Paraphlomis baiwanensis as a valuable addition to botanical science.

"Currently, we’ve found only one population of fewer than 100 individuals," explained Fan Qiang, an associate professor at the School of Life Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University and one of the study’s authors. "These plants are growing on limestone mountains at an altitude of approximately 300 meters."

The discovery not only enriches the biodiversity records of the region but also underscores the importance of conservation efforts in preserving rare and endemic species. The Baiwan Provincial Nature Reserve, home to this new species, continues to be a vital sanctuary for flora and fauna in Guangdong Province.
