China’s national data centers are making significant strides in sustainable energy usage, with some advanced centers now operating on approximately 80% green electricity. This milestone was announced by the National Data Administration during a press conference in Beijing on Monday.
In February 2022, China embarked on an ambitious project to build an integrated national big data system. This initiative involves establishing eight national computing hubs and ten national data center clusters, aiming to enhance the country’s computing capabilities and promote economic development.
By the end of March this year, these ten clusters had amassed a computing power scale exceeding 1.46 million standard racks. The impressive adoption of green electricity in some advanced data centers underscores China’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions in the technology sector.
Du Wei, director of the Department of Digital Technology and Infrastructure Construction under the National Data Administration, emphasized the nation’s ongoing efforts: “We will continue with efforts to promote the integrated development of computing power and electricity by supporting non-hub data centers in the central and western regions rich in green power resources to integrate into the national computing power network construction, so as to improve the protection capability of the national integrated computing power network.”
Looking ahead, the National Data Bureau plans to accelerate the construction of the national integrated computing power network. The bureau aims to advance the coordinated development of multi-source heterogeneous computing power and promote the convergence of various computing resources to the national hubs. Additionally, there will be guidance for domestic telecom operators to enhance the efficiency of public transmission channels, foster collaboration between industrial data and computing power, and improve data processing and governance capabilities.
This development not only signals China’s dedication to green energy but also positions the country as a leader in sustainable technology infrastructure, appealing to global businesses, investors, and environmental advocates alike.
