Recently, China’s space-based technology services have made their debut in Thailand, showcasing the potential to provide seamless internet access across borders. This expansion illustrates the country’s commitment to offering innovative solutions to global communication challenges.
Satellite internet involves satellites in space acting as base stations, effectively serving as mobile hubs that provide convenient internet access to users worldwide. This technology enables web connectivity in remote mountains, vast oceans, and high altitudes—places previously beyond the reach of traditional ground-based networks.
“We have now entered the era of satellite internet, where personal broadband access takes center stage,” said He Shanbao, a researcher at Beijing Information Science and Technology University. “Initially, satellite communication was used for transoceanic TV broadcasting and long-distance telephone calls, but the advancements have been remarkable.”
Current mobile internet coverage extends to only a fraction of the Earth’s surface. For deserts, oceans, and jungles, satellite connections are essential. “During natural disasters, when ground base stations are damaged, satellite communications become particularly crucial,” explained Yin Haoqiong, a senior researcher from China Satellite Communications Co., Ltd.
Expanding application scenarios demonstrate the versatility of satellite internet. Yin’s company, in collaboration with airlines, has launched services allowing passengers to connect to in-flight Wi-Fi using their mobile devices. Travelers can enjoy streaming videos, browse the web, and watch live sports events with speeds comparable to 4G.
