China Sets Record with 4.397 Million New Energy Vehicles Registered in H1 2024

China has achieved a new milestone in its push towards sustainable transportation, registering a record 4.397 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the first half of 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Public Security.

This surge in NEV registrations marks a significant year-on-year increase of 39.41 percent. In contrast, the first half of 2023 saw 3.128 million NEVs registered, representing a 41.6 percent rise from the same period in 2022.

As of June 2024, the total number of NEVs on China's roads reached 24.72 million, underscoring the nation's rapid adoption of eco-friendly vehicles. All-electric cars are leading this transition, with 18.13 million in use, accounting for 73.36 percent of the total NEV population.

The overall motor vehicle population in China has also expanded, totaling 440 million vehicles, including 345 million cars. This growth is accompanied by an influx of new drivers; 13.97 million individuals obtained their licenses in the first half of 2024, bringing the number of licensed drivers to 532 million, of whom 496 million are car drivers.

The increasing vehicle ownership is particularly evident in China's urban centers. A total of 96 cities now have over 1 million cars each—a rise of eight cities compared to the same period in 2023. Among these, 43 cities boast more than 2 million cars, and 26 cities have over 3 million cars.

Notably, the car populations in Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing each exceed 6 million, highlighting the significant demand for personal transportation in these megacities. Additionally, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Zhengzhou each have car populations surpassing 5 million.

China's commitment to promoting new energy vehicles reflects its broader strategy to reduce emissions and combat climate change. The significant increase in NEV registrations indicates strong consumer acceptance and a shift towards greener mobility solutions.
