Japanese AI scientist Kenmaru Suedomi, founder of Waseda AI Lab and a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, recently visited China as part of the 2024 Future Close-Up program—a high-level youth exchange initiative hosted by the China International Communications Group Center for the Americas, the Hong Kong Federation of Liaoning Associations, and Tencent.
During his visit, Suedomi explored Xiong’an New Area in north China’s Hebei Province, a region dubbed the “city of the future.” In an interview with CGTN’s Enoch Wong in Beijing, he shared his insights and reflections on China’s approach to innovation and urban development.
Suedomi was particularly struck by the Chinese government’s role in driving the construction of Xiong’an as a smart city through public-private partnerships. “It’s impressive to see how the government collaborates with private enterprises to create a city that prioritizes the well-being of its residents,” he remarked. “I wish we could see something similar happening in Japan.”
Xiong’an New Area, established in 2017, is a state-level development zone aimed at relieving Beijing of non-capital functions and advancing the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The area’s development focuses on innovation, sustainability, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies into urban planning.
Suedomi’s observations highlight the emphasis China places on people-oriented innovation. By leveraging technology and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, China is creating urban spaces that not only advance economic goals but also enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
His experience reflects a growing global interest in China’s developmental models and offers a perspective on how other countries might approach similar challenges. As nations grapple with urbanization and technological advancement, the strategies employed in places like Xiong’an could provide valuable lessons.
