Shanghai Issues First Driverless Vehicle Licenses at 2024 AI Conference

At the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Shanghai took a significant leap into the future by issuing its first batch of recognition plates for completely unmanned vehicles. This groundbreaking move, announced by the Shanghai Pudong New Area official Weibo account, positions the city at the forefront of autonomous vehicle innovation.

Four certified enterprises have been granted permission to test unmanned delivery, retail, sanitation, and other services on approved road sections. In a remarkable advancement for urban mobility, citizens can now make reservations to experience these driverless cars through corresponding mobile applications.

Currently, these unmanned vehicles are available for free rides during the demonstration application stage. This offers residents a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology and glimpse the potential future of everyday transportation.

The path to commercial operation involves rigorous testing and evaluation. Each vehicle must cover at least 5,000 kilometers while undergoing thorough assessments of safety, operational reliability, and passenger transport systems. Upon successful completion, relevant departments will conduct a final evaluation of both the enterprises and their vehicles.

Enterprises that pass this stringent evaluation will be authorized to commence commercial operations of their autonomous vehicles within designated areas of Shanghai. This initiative not only underscores Shanghai’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies but also sets a precedent for other cities aiming to integrate AI-driven solutions into urban transportation networks.

As Shanghai paves the way for driverless technology, it offers a glimpse into a future where artificial intelligence enhances efficiency, safety, and convenience in daily commutes. The success of this initiative may well influence the global adoption of autonomous vehicles, marking a new era in transportation.
