China is set to advance the evolution of 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technology and intensify research and development efforts for 6G, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Friday. The ministry also revealed plans to deploy next-generation optical networks ahead of schedule, aiming to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure.
5G-A represents a significant milestone in the transition from 5G to 6G. Compared to traditional 5G, 5G-A offers a tenfold increase in network capacity, providing higher speeds, greater connectivity, and lower latency. This advancement is expected to facilitate more sophisticated applications and drive innovation across various sectors.
“We will coordinate efforts to promote the evolution of 5G-A technology and accelerate research and innovation in 6G,” said Zhao Zhiguo, the MIIT’s chief engineer, during a press conference in Beijing. “Simultaneously, we will proactively deploy ultra-high-speed optical fiber transmission technology and next-generation optical networks.”
The MIIT emphasized the steady expansion of 5G and gigabit optical network coverage to a wider range of venues, including cultural sites, medical institutions, universities, transportation hubs, and subways. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity and support the growing demand for high-speed internet access in both urban and rural areas.
To further bolster the nation’s digital infrastructure, the ministry plans to introduce policies that accelerate the development and application of “dual-gigabit” internet—integrating 5G networks with gigabit optical networks. This initiative will promote the deep integration of 5G technology with other industries, expedite the construction of 5G-enabled factories, and develop an upgraded version of the 5G plus industrial internet.
“We will also advance the opening-up of the value-added telecom service sector in an orderly manner,” Zhao added, indicating plans to foster a more competitive and innovative telecommunications industry.
According to MIIT data, 5G applications have now been integrated into 74 of the 97 key economic sectors in China. The country has established 30,000 virtual private networks within the 5G industry, built 300 5G factories, and launched over 13,000 projects related to the 5G plus industrial internet.
These developments underscore China’s commitment to leading the next wave of global telecommunications innovation, leveraging advanced technologies to drive economic growth and enhance connectivity for its population.
