In a monumental achievement for infrastructure and transportation in south China, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link has handled over 305,000 vehicles within the first 72 hours of its official opening, as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to data from Guangdong Transportation Group.
The mega cross-sea passage, consisting of one underwater tunnel, two bridges, and two artificial islands, spans 24 kilometers across the Pearl River Delta. It connects the bustling city of Shenzhen with Zhongshan, significantly reducing travel time between the two cities from over two hours to approximately 30 minutes.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is not just a feat of engineering but also a symbol of regional integration and economic development. Recognized for setting ten world records in construction and design, the project is considered one of the most challenging cross-sea cluster projects ever undertaken.
By enhancing connectivity within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the link is expected to bolster economic activity, facilitate trade, and improve the daily commute for residents and travelers in the region. Businesses and investors anticipate that the improved infrastructure will open new opportunities in logistics, tourism, and commerce.
The project begins at the Shenzhen airport interchange, providing seamless access to one of China’s major aviation hubs, and terminates at Ma’anshan Island in Zhongshan. The underwater tunnel and the twin bridges are engineering marvels that overcame complex geological and environmental challenges, showcasing China’s advancement in large-scale infrastructure development.
The successful operation of the link within the first few days reflects its potential to transform transportation dynamics in the Pearl River Delta. As vehicles continue to flow smoothly across the passage, the region looks forward to a new era of connectivity and growth.
