China is set to enhance the use of information technology (IT) in its public healthcare system, aiming to establish integrated operation and management information platforms in all tertiary public hospitals nationwide by the end of 2027. This ambitious plan was outlined in a recent circular issued by the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
By the end of 2025, 50% of these hospitals are expected to adopt the platforms, marking a significant step towards the digitization of healthcare services. The initiative underscores China’s commitment to refining, standardizing, and digitizing internal processes within public medical institutions to achieve efficient management and high-quality development.
To realize these goals, China’s health authorities plan to leverage modern information technologies, including artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing. The focus will be on improving interoperability and data sharing among different internal information systems, enhancing the role of IT in integrating business and economic management.
Moreover, the health authorities are intensifying efforts to crack down on illegal access to medical insurance funds by medical institutions. A three-year special operation aims to curb fraud and regulate diagnosis, treatment, and pricing practices. The circular emphasized the need to strengthen audit and supervision through information technologies, establishing a robust long-term supervision mechanism.
China’s public healthcare system comprises approximately 12,000 public hospitals, with around 2,800 classified as tertiary public hospitals. These tertiary hospitals play a crucial role in providing specialized medical and health services, known for their technical expertise, management capabilities, and research capacities.
