HKUST’s Stanley Ying Envisions Hong Kong as Global Innovation Hub

On July 1, as Hong Kong celebrated the 27th anniversary of its return to China, leading figures in the city’s tech scene are optimistic about its future as a global innovation hub. Stanley Ying, co-lead and co-founder of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Web 3.0 Labs, shared his insights in an interview with CGTN’s Enoch Wong.

Ying emphasized the pivotal role of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in driving Hong Kong’s growth and facilitating international exchanges. “One Country, Two Systems has provided a unique environment where Hong Kong can leverage both its global connections and its integration with the Chinese mainland,” he said.

Highlighting the city’s vibrant ecosystem, Ying believes Hong Kong is well-positioned to lead in technology and innovation on the global stage. “With our world-class universities, international talent, and supportive policies, we have the ingredients to become a global center for technological advancement, especially in emerging fields like Web 3.0,” he noted.

Ying also encouraged the city’s youth to engage more deeply with the Chinese mainland. “I urge young people in Hong Kong to regularly visit the Chinese mainland, to seek inspiration, and to broaden their horizons,” he said. “Understanding the vast opportunities and developments across the mainland can fuel innovation and collaboration.”

As Hong Kong looks to the future, leaders like Ying see a path forward that combines the city’s rich heritage with cutting-edge technology. “By fostering innovation and embracing our unique position, Hong Kong can continue to thrive as an international city that bridges East and West,” he concluded.
