Beijing, Oct 23, 2023—The Ministry of Public Security of China has initiated a pilot program introducing digitized vehicle registration licenses across 60 cities, aiming to enhance traffic management services and simplify procedures for drivers.
The new digital licenses were rolled out on Monday, with over 2.15 million drivers embracing the innovation on the first day. Major cities participating in the pilot include Beijing and Tianjin, signaling a significant move towards nationwide adoption.
Under current Chinese law, drivers are required to carry both a physical driving license and a vehicle registration certificate while operating a vehicle. The introduction of digital licenses seeks to modernize this process, allowing drivers to access their documents conveniently via mobile devices.
In addition to the digitized licenses, the ministry has upgraded its online traffic services through the Traffic Management 12123 platform. This enhancement supports an auto replacement subsidy program, benefiting more than 63,000 drivers to date. The platform’s improved services have provided increased accuracy and convenience to over 4 million individuals and enterprises, streamlining procedures and reducing administrative burdens.
The pilot program represents a significant step in China’s broader efforts to integrate digital technology into public services. By leveraging mobile platforms and online services, the government aims to provide more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly experiences for its citizens.
As the program progresses, it’s expected to contribute to smoother traffic management and set a precedent for other regions considering similar digital transformations.
