The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the world’s largest regional organization in terms of geographic scope and population, is spearheading digital transformation across Eurasia. With influential members like China, Russia, and India, the SCO is fostering technological innovation and collaboration among its member states.
In June, the SCO established a pioneering alliance focused on City Information Modeling (CIM), a transformative concept revolutionizing urban planning, design, construction, and management. Jointly founded by 11 Chinese institutions, including the China Academy of Building Research and Tsinghua University, the alliance aims to provide comprehensive CIM technology to SCO members.
By embracing the Chinese approach, which has led to remarkable infrastructure projects globally, cities within the SCO are set to benefit from intelligent and precise management using advanced technologies like digital twins.
“We will leverage technological innovations like digital twins to manage cities digitally, intelligently, and precisely,” said Li Gang, Deputy Secretary of the SCO Demonstration Zone Party Committee in Qingdao City, Shandong Province.
Qingdao, hosting a pivotal area for trade among SCO members, is witnessing an increasing exchange of technologies along these trade routes. In May, an alliance for industrial digitalization was formed in the city to promote the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) based on large data models among SCO members.
The initial 83 members of this alliance include major players like China Mobile, Huawei, and Haier Cosmoplat, who are leaders in internet services, data center solutions, and Internet of Things (IoT) services respectively.
On a national level, the Digital Technology Platform (DTP) for SCO countries was established in September 2023 to enhance the use of digital technologies. The DTP serves as a comprehensive cooperation mechanism for SCO members.
E-commerce giants such as Xiaomi, JD.com, and Lenovo have joined the platform to advance digitalization across the Belt and Road regions. They have committed to sharing their best practices in AI, big data, blockchain, and cloud computing with all SCO members in a fair and respectful manner.
The SCO’s commitment to digital transformation underscores its vision for a connected and innovative future. Through initiatives like the CIM alliance and the DTP, the organization is not only embracing digital transformation but also empowering its members to thrive in an interconnected world.
