China has significantly expanded its transportation infrastructure in 2023, solidifying its position as the owner of the world’s largest transport networks. According to a report released by the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, the country’s transportation networks have grown to over 6 million kilometers in length, encompassing the world’s largest high-speed rail network, expressway network, postal express delivery network, and an interconnected network of world-class port facilities.
The rapid development of China’s transport sector has been a driving force behind the nation’s robust economic growth. In 2023, fixed-asset investment in the transport sector reached 3.91 trillion yuan ($539 billion), marking a 1.5 percent year-on-year increase. This substantial investment has led to impressive expansions across various modes of transportation.
By the end of 2023, China’s railway network extended to 159,000 kilometers, with 45,000 kilometers dedicated to high-speed rail. The country’s extensive road network expanded to 5.44 million kilometers, including 183,600 kilometers of expressways. The aviation sector also saw growth, with five new commercial airports added in 2023, bringing the total number to 259.
Infrastructure improvements were not limited to urban areas. The year 2023 saw significant enhancements in rural connectivity, with 188,000 kilometers of new or rebuilt rural roads completed. High-speed rail lines were expanded by 2,776 kilometers, and expressway networks grew by 6,394 kilometers through new construction and expansion projects.
The enhanced infrastructure has translated into tangible benefits for transportation services. Commercial freight transportation saw an 8.1 percent year-on-year increase, reaching a total volume of 54.75 billion metric tonnes in 2023. Passenger movement experienced a significant surge, with cross-regional passenger trips totaling 61.29 billion, reflecting a remarkable 30.7 percent increase from the previous year.
The Ministry of Transport also highlighted the achievement of full postal service coverage across China, ensuring that all established villages have access to essential postal services. This milestone underscores the nation’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents and fostering inclusive economic development.
China’s ongoing investment in its transportation networks is expected to continue driving economic growth, providing opportunities for businesses and investors worldwide. The expansion of infrastructure not only enhances domestic connectivity but also strengthens China’s role in global trade and commerce.
