The Yangtze River Delta, one of China’s most economically dynamic regions, celebrated a significant milestone on Saturday with the inauguration of its first railway loop line. This groundbreaking transit route intricately weaves the bustling metropolis of Shanghai with key urban centers throughout the delta, enhancing connectivity and regional integration.
The inaugural train, coded G8388, departed from Shanghai Railway Station at 10:27 a.m., embarking on a journey that encircles the delta in just over eight hours. Covering more than 1,200 kilometers, the loop line links major cities such as Nanjing, Hefei, and Hangzhou—each serving as pivotal transportation hubs connected to the nation’s main railway arteries.
Yang Xiuzhi, a senior engineer with China Railway Shanghai Bureau Group Co., Ltd., highlighted the loop line’s role in bridging smaller cities with central urban areas within the delta. “This new line enables smaller cities to integrate more fully into the regional economy, fostering balanced development across the Yangtze River Delta,” she said.
Not only is the loop line a feat of engineering, but it is also a scenic journey through some of China’s most picturesque locales. Passengers can enjoy views of historic and cultural cities including Suzhou, Wuxi, and the famous West Lake in Hangzhou, making the route both a practical transit option and an attraction for travelers.
