Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled its latest line of artificial intelligence processors, signaling a bold move to challenge industry leader Nvidia in the booming AI semiconductor market.
At the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, Taiwan, AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced the MI325X accelerator, set to be available in the fourth quarter of 2024. This new chip is part of AMD’s strategic plan to develop a series of AI processors over the next two years.
“AI is clearly our number one priority as a company, and we have harnessed all of the development capability within the company to do that,” Su told reporters. She emphasized the importance of an annual release cycle, stating, “Every year we have the next big thing such that we always have the most competitive portfolio.”
The race to develop generative AI programs has led to surging demand for advanced chips capable of supporting complex applications in AI data centers. Nvidia currently dominates this lucrative market, commanding about 80 percent of its share. However, AMD is vying to compete against Nvidia by accelerating its product development cycle to match Nvidia’s pace.
AMD’s shares rose 1.4 percent following the announcement, while Nvidia’s shares increased by approximately 3 percent before the market opened.
In addition to the MI325X, AMD introduced the upcoming MI350 series, expected to be available in 2025 and based on a new chip architecture. The company anticipates the MI350 to perform 35 times better in inference—the process of computing generative AI responses—compared to the current MI300 series.
Looking further ahead, AMD revealed plans for the MI400 series, slated for release in 2026. This future lineup will be based on an architecture code-named “Next,” aiming to push the boundaries of AI processing capabilities.
As the demand for AI technology continues to escalate globally, AMD’s strategic developments signify a significant push to gain a stronger foothold in the AI semiconductor industry. This move not only impacts global markets but also offers new opportunities for businesses and researchers interested in AI advancements across Asia and beyond.
