China’s advancements in green technologies are set to play a pivotal role in accelerating global environmental efforts, especially in Europe, according to an Italian professor of international relations.
Silvia Menegazzi, a professor at the Department of Political Science at LUISS University and a founding partner of the Center for Studies of Contemporary China, highlighted China’s leadership in sectors like electric vehicles, solar panels, and lithium batteries. “China has made great investments in areas of electric vehicles, solar panels, and lithium batteries for many years, and as a result, they’re in a leading position,” Menegazzi said during an interview with Xinhua on Friday.
She emphasized that countries aiming to expedite their green transitions would likely turn to China’s technologies. “The leading position of China means that countries seeking to accelerate their green transitions would certainly import China’s technologies,” she noted.
While acknowledging that developing green energy-related sectors can spur global competition, Menegazzi also pointed out the potential for international collaboration. “It is also a sector that can strengthen global cooperation, especially because they are sectors that can improve global environmental governance,” she added.
Menegazzi observed that some countries are prioritizing the development of their own domestic industries. However, she stressed that China’s technologies remain essential for those wanting to quicken their shift towards green energy. “But while they are doing so, if they want to make the green transition quickly, the technologies from China will play a role,” she said.
China’s commitment to green technology development reflects its broader strategy to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable growth. As nations worldwide grapple with the impacts of climate change, leveraging China’s expertise could be instrumental in achieving global environmental goals.
