China Launches First 12,000-Cubic Meter LNG Refueling Vessel

China has launched its first 12,000-cubic meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport refueling vessel, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s maritime and energy sectors.

The vessel, named “Haiyang Shiyou 302,” entered service on Sunday in Qidong City, Jiangsu Province. With a length of 132.9 meters and a deck area surpassing that of a standard football pitch, the ship is capable of meeting the monthly natural gas needs of approximately 480,000 households.

Powered by an advanced electric propulsion system, “Haiyang Shiyou 302” can navigate both rivers and seas with remarkable efficiency. It features two towering tanks, each over 20 meters in height, designed to transport and refuel LNG. The vessel’s mast is uniquely engineered to fold down when passing under bridges along the Yangtze River, enhancing its operational versatility.

“The vessel will enhance the service capacity and competitiveness of ports in China,” said Huang Guoliang, deputy chief engineer of the oil production service branch of CNOOC Energy Development Co., Ltd., in an interview with China Media Group. “It can replenish natural gas for a large number of foreign cargo ships and merchant ships in China more conveniently, promoting green development in the global shipping industry.”

The introduction of “Haiyang Shiyou 302” is expected to bolster China's LNG refueling capabilities, supporting the country's commitment to reducing emissions and fostering sustainable growth in maritime trade. By providing an efficient and environmentally friendly refueling option for ships, China is positioning itself as a key player in advancing green shipping practices worldwide.
