China’s coal-rich Shanxi Province has reported a remarkable increase in coalbed methane production, extracting 3.07 billion cubic meters in the first three months of 2024. This figure marks an 11.8 percent year-on-year growth and accounts for approximately 80.8 percent of the country’s total output, according to the provincial energy bureau.
Kang Yi, an official from the energy bureau, highlighted the province’s significant progress in expanding coalbed methane reserves and output. He noted that Shanxi’s annual production in 2023 skyrocketed by 249 percent compared to 2015 levels.
Coalbed methane, a byproduct of coal mining, plays a crucial role in reducing mining risks, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and alleviating gas shortages. By harnessing this resource, Shanxi Province is contributing to cleaner energy initiatives and supporting China’s efforts to reduce environmental impact.
As one of several Chinese regions rich in coalbed methane resources, Shanxi houses about a third of the nation’s estimated reserves. The province’s focus on developing this resource underscores its commitment to balancing energy needs with environmental sustainability.
