China Achieves Breakthrough in Domestic Production of Carbon-14 Isotopes

Qinshan, China — For the first time, China has successfully mass-produced carbon-14 isotopes using its commercial reactors, a significant step announced by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) on Saturday. This achievement positions China to fully meet its domestic demand for carbon-14, an essential isotope used in various fields such as medicine, archaeology, and environmental science.

The production took place at Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, China’s first nuclear power facility, marking a milestone in the nation’s nuclear technology development. The CNNC reported that approximately 150 curies of carbon-14 were produced, surpassing the annual import volume of around 100 curies. This increase not only reduces dependency on foreign sources but also enhances the stability of supply for critical industries.

Carbon-14 isotopes play a crucial role in medical diagnostics, radiocarbon dating, and research into climate change. The ability to produce these isotopes domestically allows for greater control over scientific research and medical applications. “This breakthrough signifies a new level of self-sufficiency in our nuclear capabilities,” said a spokesperson for the CNNC.
