China Completes First 1,500 km Cross-Regional Test with Hydrogen-Powered Trucks

China has successfully completed its first long-distance, cross-regional transport test using hydrogen-powered trucks, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s commitment to clean energy transportation. The two heavy-duty vehicles traversed approximately 1,500 kilometers from Beijing’s Daxing District to Shanghai over two days, showcasing the practicality of hydrogen fuel cells for long-haul freight.

Operated by China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group), one of China’s leading oil refiners, the trucks carried essential cargo, including hydrogen fuel cell cooling liquid and diesel vehicle exhaust treatment liquid. Each truck was equipped with a 180-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell system and weighed 28 tonnes. Along their journey, they utilized seven hydrogen refueling stations, underlining the growing infrastructure supporting hydrogen energy in China.

“This transport test represents a breakthrough in the application of hydrogen energy for heavy-duty logistics,” a representative from Sinopec Group stated. “It demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of hydrogen-powered vehicles in meeting the demands of long-distance, heavy-load transportation.”

Hydrogen-fueled vehicles offer significant benefits over traditional fossil fuel vehicles, especially in long-haul scenarios. Unlike electric vehicles, which require lengthy charging times, hydrogen vehicles can be refueled quickly, similar to conventional fueling methods, making them ideal for transporting heavy loads over extensive distances.

China’s commitment to hydrogen energy is further evidenced by its rapid expansion of hydrogen refueling stations. As of now, China boasts 428 hydrogen refueling stations across 30 provinces and cities, ranking first globally and contributing to the total of 1,152 stations worldwide. This extensive network facilitates the practical use of hydrogen-powered vehicles across the nation.

The successful completion of this test not only highlights China’s technological advancements in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles but also signifies a step forward in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions on a global scale.
